Common questions about financial advice
How do I choose a financial adviser in Brisbane?
Check three things before you commit: that the adviser appears on ASIC’s Financial Advisers Register, how they are paid, and whether you will receive a written Statement of Advice with all fees disclosed beforehand. Ask what their advice can cover — some advisers are limited to a narrow list of products. A first meeting should cost you nothing and leave you clearer, whether or not you go ahead.
What does financial advice cost in Australia?
Most advisers charge a set fee for a Statement of Advice, then an optional ongoing fee if you want continuing service. The amount depends on how complex your situation is, and every fee must be disclosed in writing before you commit to anything. At Queensland Financial Group our strategic and investment advice is fee-for-service; insurance advice may involve commission, disclosed the same way.
Is the advice from my super fund enough?
Super fund advice is generally limited to that fund’s own products. It can help with contributions or investment options inside your account, but it cannot weigh up insurance you hold elsewhere, a partner’s superannuation, an investment property or a business. If your position extends beyond a single account, you are making decisions with only part of the picture visible.
How much super do I need to retire?
It depends on the lifestyle you want, whether you own your home, and your Age Pension eligibility. The ASFA Retirement Standard is the common benchmark, but the right figure is personal — the only way to know yours is to model your own position. Our retirement planning advice page covers this in more detail.
What does a financial adviser do that my accountant doesn’t?
An accountant deals mainly with tax, compliance and reporting what has already happened. A financial adviser is licensed to advise on what happens next: superannuation, investments, personal insurance, retirement income and estate planning. The two overlap on tax structuring and generally work best together — we frequently work alongside a client’s existing accountant.
